Improve readability in Ubuntu 8.10

I was trying to read a page and saw that the font rendering was terrible and hard to read. Found a partial solution here “How to Achieve Nice Font Rendering in Ubuntu Hardy

It didn’t make the world a perfect place, but it certainly improved the readability as seen in the example below. In the first pic some letters are practically printed on each other, while in the second the spacing between characters has been notably improved.

DropBox

I’ve been using Dropbox (www.getdropbox.com) for a while to sync my most important documents. Works like a charm and works on both my Windows computer, my virtual Windows machine on the laptop as well as under Ubuntu. I have to restart the computer now to see if it works but I just tried to install the deb-package for 8.04.

Other neat features, apart from getting your docs synced on several computers, with Dropbox is the ability to access your documents from a webpage and to share folders with your friends.

KeePassX

Really nice program for storing all passwords in. Protect your passwords with both a keyfile and a password. Works beautifully!

Running pretty good, but scared the shit out of me the other day.

Yesterday I tried to install a 3G datacard while ridin’ a train. Didn’t go particularly well. Computer hung and I had to reboot a couple of times until I gave up.

When I got home I tried to start the computer with no success. It wouldn’t start xwindows and it wouldn’t mount /home. It felt impossible to have the second hard disk corruption in two days, but I tried everything I could think of. After about 5 reboots everything came back up and has been running perfectly ever since. Scary. I will start to work on some sort of backup pretty soon.
